History - Elephant Festival in Jaipur
Elephants have held a significant position from time immemorial for the kings as they are the symbol of power and they were the integral part of not only wars but also of festivals . In the Jataka stories of Buddhism the tradition of Hastimangala (the Elephant Festival) has been mentioned . The festivals saw Nishan-Ka- Hathi leading the procession while the king always mounted an ornately decorated elephant.
The Tourism Department of Rajasthan included Elephant Festival,Jaipur to promote the culture of Rajasthan The game of polo was recently included and it was inspired by a cartoon which depicted the Indian polo team riding an elephant after winning the international tournaments. The old stadium at Jaipur, the Chaugan forms the venue for the magnificent event every year.

Events that take place in the Elephant Festival in Jaipur,Rajasthan are :

  -   A splendid parade of the majestic elephants richly decorated in gold ornaments and velvets takes place and they offer the guests garlands and give the ceremonious salute.

  -   Best Decorated Elephant’ Shield is given to the best elephant in the ramp.

  -   Game of polo ensues where you find the elephants chasing the ball though not in great speed like the horses but is quite enthralling nevertheless.

  -   Tug-Of-War between the largest elephant and ten people.

  -   Gaj Shringar , an exhibition where display of elephant-ornaments, textiles, howdahs and carriages, paintings etc.

  -   Program of Dhaph and Gair dance in conformance of the lively mood of Holi

  -   Breathtaking display of fireworks marks the end of the event.
