Therefore there are many churches to be found
in Kerala. St. Mary's Church was built in 1579
by Thekkumkoor Maharajah. This church portrays
outstanding architecture which is a blend of Kerala
and Portuguese styles. The walls are adorned with
beautiful murals made in oriental and western
styles on biblical and non biblical themes. St.
Mary's Church, Manarcad is one of the most important
churches among the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Christians.
Marthoman Church is also a Malankara Syrian Orthodox
Church. It was established between AD 1110 and
1125. In 1675, Mor Anthrayos arrived at this church
and lived here for several years. Kyomtha Chapel
was established by late Mor Ostatheos Thomas,
Metropolitan of Cochin Diocese in the mid-1980s
atop a hill in Thiruvankulam where the late Very
Rev. Mookencheril Ramban used to meditate. The
bishopric of the Cochin diocese is now located
here. Sts. Peter's and Paul's Church was established
in 1867 However, this church was destroyed in
1868 due to a fire sparked by fireworks on the
church festival day. In 1873, the rebuilt church
was consecrated by the Malankara Metropolitan
Pulikkottil Mar Dionysius Joseph in the name of
St. Stephen
