Gurudongmar Lake in Sikkim is of great importance to the Sikkimese and ranks as the highest lake in the world, about 17500 ft. It is one of the sacred lakes in the state. The lake lies in the northern Sikkim in the land of yaks seen only in the snowy regions. Just 8 to 9 hrs run from the capital city Gangtok, the lake is a beautiful place to visit.

About the lake:

The legend depicts that in the days of yore this ancient lake of the 8th century remained frozen throughout the winter creating problem for the nearby residents. But as a holy guru, after hearing the complaint of the people touched the lake a pportion of the frozen body started melting. Since then the lake is considered as sacred and freezes partially leaving behind enough water for the people. If trekked further it meets the Chinese border which is just 5 Kms away. This lake is on the India's highest Kanchenjunga range plateau which connects the Tibetan Plateau further. Gurudongmar lake is one of the source stream of the Teesta River is a fresh water lake. The blessed water of the lake is believed to posses the phenomenal power of conceding children to issueless couples.

Best time to visit:

If one wants to grab the opportunity of viewing the frozen lake then the time from November to Mid-May is the best as the lake remains completely frozen in these months. Mostly the months from March to June or November end to December end is preferred.
