Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lingaraja Temple is situated in the pilgrimage city, Bhubaneswar, Orissa. This magnificent temple is biggest of all in Bhubaneswar representing the type of Hindu architecture. It is believed that Lingaraja Temple is built by the ruler Yayati Kesari in the 7th century. The temple has images of Lord Shiva and Vishnu.

The Shivalingum in the chamber of the Lingaraja temple rises to the height of 8 inches above the floor lever and is 8 feet in diameter.  Lord Shiva is being worshipped here as Tribhuvaneshwara (Master of three worlds, i.e. heaven, earth and netherworld). Total 22 worship services are offered each day and the figure of Lingaraja is taken to the Jalamandir in the centre of the Bindu Sagar Lake once in a year. This temple is the most notable monument in Bhubanehswar and one of the oldest temples. This temple conforms to the building principles of the Kalinga School of Architecture and it is built along the Bindu Sagar Lake.  It is said that the lake has been created by Lord Shiva to satisfy the thirst of Parvati.

Lingaraja temple has 100 subsidiary shrines enclosed by high walls having main entrance at the east and secondary gates on the north and south. It has four parts: the main temple, the Yajna Shala, the BhogaMandap and finally the Natya Shala.
