Fort Raigad is situated in Raigad district of Maharashtra. It was the capital of King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj because according to him the fort was so terrifying & difficult as no blade of grass grows on completely vertical rock. British has also defined the fort Raigad as ‘The Gibraltar of East'.

Major Attractions:


On Raigad fort, there is a magnificent Maha Darwaja located in such a way that it cannot be easily found. The other entrances such as Mena Darwaja, Palkhi Darwaja have their own importance. Few of the other attractions include, Raj Bhavan - a mute witness of the joy, grief, anger, victories and great generosity of Shivaji Chhatrapati, the pictorial Ganga Sagar, Nagarkhana, 'Royal Throne' which is at a distance of 200 feet, Takmak Tok - a cliff & execution point for the sentenced criminals and a Samadhi of Shiv Chhatrapati. Ropeway, a new facility added for reaching the top of the fort is a wonderful experience.  Some nearby places to see are Mahabaleshwar, Ganpatipule.

How to Reach?


Mumbai (150 Kms) & Pune (140 Kms) are well connected by road. Vir-Dasgaon is the nearest railway station on Konkan railway. Pune is the nearest airport.

Accommodation in Raigad is limited and there are few basic stay options available namely MTDC resort, Jog engineering lodging etc. Other stay options are Hotel Visava & Hotel Kuber Palace in nearby town Mahad.
