Bhimbetka is very famous for its rock arts and cave paintings. It is located in Raisen District in Madhya Pradesh lying 46 km south of Bhopal. It is surrounded by Vindhya ranges. The rocks are the shelters and caves are the witness of the existence of mankind in the pre-historic times. It is also a World Heritage Site secreted in the forest of teak and sal in craggy cliffs. It is characterized by rock-strewn topography with thick woods and wrinkled precipices and also it is a retreat of serenity and harmony of the picnickers. It is one of the most primitive dwellings of human race which boasts of a history of 35000 years old.

The caves of Bhimbetka also known as rock shelters have ancient prehistoric aboriginal paintings depicting the lives and times of people of the Stone Age living in these caves. The scenes which are painted on the walls include animals around them like tigers, wild buffalos, rhinoceros etc. The scenes also include pictures depicting their dance, music, religious rituals and child birth. Other paintings depict the tools they used for hunting, cooking and other purposes.

They used natural colors like red and white pigments from vegetable dye which are preserved till date. The oldest painting of this cave is 12000 years old and there are more than 700 caves. Some of the paintings belong from Paleolithic age to medieval period.

It is believed that Bhimbetka is named after Bhima, one of the Pandavas of Mahabharata as the Hindu epic is associated with the location.
