Bandhavgarh Fort is believed to be 2000 years old as there are no records to show when it was built and constructed. This fort is situated in Bandhavgarh in Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, located on the Bandhavgarh hills and is at the center of the Bandhavgarh National Park. This is an ancient fort in Bandhavgarh which has been under the control of many dynasties who ruled the kingdom in which Bandhavgarh was a part. It is believed that according to mythology, Lord Rama after defeating the demon King Ravana of the Lanka, stopped here and built the fort for his brother Laxman to keep a watch over Lanka. This is how Bandhavgarh is named which means Brother's Fort (Bandhav means 'Brother' and Garh means 'Fort').

Now, Laxman is worshipped here by the local people as the God of the fort. Earlier there was a priest whose allegiance was with the Maharaja of Rewa but now the present priest is an employee of the forest department. Mainly two major festivals are being celebrated at the temple with the local surrounding population being allowed free access during this time.

It is a marvelous site for tourists looking for historical evidences and archeological findings though the fort and temple is in ruin. There are historical building and 12 ponds inside the fort. The fort is surrounded by Bandhavgarh National Park which is breathtaking. One can visit Bandhavgarh during the trip to Bandhavgarh National Park. Once there was a motorable road but the only way up now is on foot.
