It is one of the Temple Festivals of Kerala celebrated at Thrissur at Vadakkumnathan Temple in the month of April. The most colorful and extravagant temple festival in the state, Thrissur Pooram attracts large number of devotees and spectators from all parts of the state, country and other parts of the world as well. As this temple is situated on the hillock right in the centre of the city, it attracts many devotees from all over the world during this Pooram Festival. Pooram is participated and conducted by people cutting across all barriers of religion and caste. The images of the deities from all the temples of the villages are taken to the elephants to the main temple.

Thrissur Pooram is called 'the pooram of all the poorams' (festival) and is the biggest of all festivals in Kerala. There is a grand assembly of caparisoned elephants, amazing pyrotechnic displays, spellbinding, ensembles of percussion instruments and enthusiastic crowds. This festival is globally recognized for its charm. Main features of this festival are decorated elephants. There is firework, umbrella showing competition and a superb elephant procession which is glorious. Pooram is one of the stars in Hindu among 27 Nakshatras.  

The most impressive processions are Thriuvambadi Bhagavathy from the Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple and the Paramekkavu Bhagavathi from Paramekkavu temple and this celebration lasts for over 36 hours includes parasol displays and firework shows.
