Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the hills of the Western Ghats of Thekkady, Kerala. It is a great example of nature's gift having immense scenic charm which is rich in biodiversity providing veritable visitor satisfaction. In 1995 it was established as a Sanctuary and as a Tiger Reserve in 1978. It is the famous tiger reserve where tourists also visit to see Indian Elephants.

This place is rich in fauna where elephants are easily seen. Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer and Dole or Indian Wild Dog are some of the famous species which are found in this sanctuary. Rare four species of primates which are found here are lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque. Nilgiri Tahr is also among the species which is rarely seen here. The major flora in the park includes the Teak, Rosewood, Terminalia, Eucalyptus, Sandalwood and Jacaranda. Best time to visit this sanctuary is between the months of October and June.

Periyar Lake: This Lake was formed by the construction of a dam on the Periyar River in 1895.

Kumily: Kumily is a rising town in where tourism is catching up so fast. Spice trade is the major occupation of this town.  

Cardamom Hills: Kumily and Periyar are the famous and convenient points where tourists can easily explore Kerala's beautiful Cardamom.

Boat Cruises:  Periyar Lake offers an excellent opportunity to explore the wildlife in this sanctuary. This is the excellent boating spot for the visitors.

The sanctuary can be reached through road, rail and air from Kumily, Kottayam and Kochi (Cochin).
