Nehru Trophy Boat Race which is popularly known as "Vallam Kali" (boat race) is held in Punnamada Lake near Allaphuza, Kerala. It is conducted on the second Saturday of August every year and is the most popular and competitive among the boat races. It is also known as Snake Boat Race as it is most popular event. This Boat race conducts various events such as Churulan Vallam, Iruttukuthy Vallam, Odi Vallam, Veppu Vallam (Vaipu Vallam), Vadakkanody Vallam and Kochu Vallam. It is the major tourist attraction.

The first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru visited Kerala in 1952; he was welcomed by a roaring reception by the people of Alleppey accompanied by the huge snake boats. He donated a rolling trophy as an award to the winner of the race as he experienced the tremendous excitement of sailing in the snake boat. Since then the replica of the snake boat in silver which is placed on wooden abacus inscribed with "To the winner of the boat-race which is a unique feature of community life in Travancore- Cochin" is being awarded to the winner of the race.
