Spread in about 57 acres area, the sanctuary is a tiny island on the banks of river Kaveri about 5 km away from Srirangapatna. A perfect spot for the bird watchers- it the place where numerous birds breed & nest their generations. The sanctuary attained the position as a bird sanctuary in the early 1940, as a courtesy of the visions of India's noted ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali. He during his examination of the birds of Mysore advocated for the establishment of such an excellent place.

Flora & Fauna:


The beautiful picturesque of green forsts includes a wide species of birds like- white ibis, spoon billed storks, open billed storks, painted storks, kingfishers, sandpiper cormorants, darters, white necked storks, egrets, herons, terns, swallows etc. A few mammals in the sanctuary like fruit palm civets, common bats, bonnet macaques, mongoose and common otters can be viewed in the forest. Marshy crocodiles too add up to the reptile population of the sanctuary. The entire atmosphere echoes with the calls of different birds making it a paradise of birds.

Activities & Nearby Attractions:


Ranger-guided boat tours form an easier way to watch birds, crocodiles, otters and bats & others. The best seasons for visiting the paradise are: June - November (during the nesting season of the water birds). The top time to watch migratory birds is usually December that may sometimes vary year to year. The captivating town of Mysore & the Garden city Bangalore are the two places to visit mainly.

Cleanliness:


It the prime importance of the sanctuary as eating, drinking, smoking & use of plastic bags & other non-degradable articles are prohibited as they may hamper the natural beauty.

Ranganathittu offers three riverside cottages for the visitors to relax. Many tourists prefer accommodation at Mysore & Bangalore.
