The tropical forest lying amidst of the Western Ghats is the 25th Tiger Reserve in India since 1998. It covers nearly 492.46 kms of area and is about38 km from Chikmagalur & 275 km from Bangalore. Kallahathigiri is the higest peak in the sanctuary (1875Mts) & Kemmannugundi and Bababuden Hills stand within the sanctuary. Rich in its flora & fauna, Bhadra wildlife is a paradise to the animals.

Flora & Fauna:


The beautiful, abundant, lush green vegetation of the sanctuary form a captivating view on the natural canvas. The plant life of the Bhadra Sanctuary includes mostly moist and dry deciduous forests. More than a species of 120 different trees grow here, basically including Mathi, Honne, Nandi Teak, Rosewood, Tadasalu and Kindal. The fauna  of the sanctuary consists of a wide range of nearly more than 250 species of birds like- Peacock, painted bush quail, emerald dove, Munia Bee eaters, grey jungle fowl, red spur fowl, the ruby-throated bulbul, shama, malabar whistling thrush, four species of hornbill, Indian tree pie, southern green imperial pigeon, great pied hornbill, great black woodpecker, great horned owl, black napped flycatcher and the open billed stork & many common birds like pigeons, parrots and many more.

King cobra, Indian monitor, vipers, wolf snake, gliding lizards and many more add to the population of the reptiles. It is also a home for many butterflies, tailed jay, great orange tip, baronet, crimson rose, etc. many other animals like the Tiger, leopard, wild dog, wild boar, common langur, bonnet macaque, jackal, elephant, gaur, sloth bear & a number more.

Things to Do & Accommodation:


The major activities of the wildlife are watching tigers & elephants. The best time to visit Bhadra wildlife is from October to February.There are many riverside lodges & cottages, jungle lodges & resorts for the adventure lovers to rest with the basic comforts of life.
