Hazratbal Shrine is the famous shrine of Muslims in Srinagar District which is situated on the left bank of Dal Lake. It is dedicated to Prophet Mohammad and is considered to be Kashmir's holiest Muslim Shrine which reflects its glory and holiness on the pristine water. The name of Shrine comes from the Arabic word 'Hazrat' which means holy or majestic and the Kashmiri word 'bal' means place. The Moi-e-Muqqadas (the sacred hair) of Mohammad is preserved here. The Moi-e-Muqqadas in the glass casket is open for public display only on special occasions. This shrine is known by many names including Hazratbal, Assar-e-Sharief, Madinat-us-Sani, Dargah Sharief and Dargah.

Many people participate in the colorful and vibrant fairs held at Hazratbal every year. The most important among these is Shab-e-Meraj and Watul Mela. Thousands of devotees across the Kashmir valley thronged Hazratbal Shrine on Friday following the occasion Mehraj-Ul-Alam is the main attraction. Another attraction of Hazratbal is that it is the only domed mosque in Srinagar.
