Dal Lake is one of the largest lakes in the world which is in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. It is an icon of the Kashmir Tourism Industry and is nicknamed as the "Jewel in the crown of Kashmir" or "Srinagar's Jewel". This lake is also an important source for fishing and water plant harvesting. It has five basins and a number of channels that are well linked with each other. The lake is surrounded by mountains on its three sides and a large number of gardens and orchards all along the shores.
The Dal Lake has a length of 8km long and a width of 4km and it spreads over a total of 26 Sq.km. It is divided into two smaller ones the Lokut (small) and Bod (big) Dal. It is unique in having hundreds of house boats which offer an opportunity for tourists to reside on the lake in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. The boats are served by Shikaras which are tastefully decorated. The campus of the Kashmir University is located along the shores of the Lake. The glorious Mughal gardens on its shores contribute to the beauty of the Dal Lake. The floating gardens of the Dal Lake are considered a beauty in themselves.
