
Tapti River at Surat, Gujarat
Rising within the eastern Satpura Range of southern Madhya Pradesh, Tapti River traverses a total length of 724 kilometers. One of the three major rivers of peninsular India flowing from east towards west, Tapti develops while draining the Nimar region of Madhya Pradesh State before entering Khandesh and east-Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra. From this northwest corner of the Deccan Plateau, Tapti further moves on to areas within south Gujarat before emptying into the Arabian Sea at the Gulf of Khambat near Surat City.
Tapti River Tributaries
Tapti River is having six major tributaries enriching its course. These are the Aner River, Bori River, Waghur River, Panzara River, Girna River and the Purna River which runs parallel to a while before joining the Tapti at Changdev in Jalgaon District of Maharashtra. Over 41 other small tributaries strengthen the Tapti River flow in its long journey through the state of Maharashtra. Nesu River is another prominent tributary enjoining Tapti River before it ends near Surat in Gujarat State.
Places of Interest on Tapti River
Some of the major towns alongside the Tapti River include Multai, Betul and Burhanpur within the state of Madhya Pradesh. Bhusawal in Maharashtra and Surat City in Gujarat are the other prominent towns located on the banks of the Tapti River.
The Melghat Tiger Reserve which is a part of Project Tiger is an important site along the southeast bank of Tapti River on the Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra state boundaries.
Ukai Dam
Located near Songadh Town of Gujarat State, Ukai Dam is the second barrage constructed on the Tapti River; Hatnur Dam is the first located in the Jalgaon District of Maharashtra State.
