Located amidst the hustle and bustle of Porbandar City-life, the Porbandar Bird Sanctuary spread over a one square kilometer area is surrounded by lush trees and plants of various kinds. This unique piece of water-dwelled area was affirmed as a protected Bird Sanctuary in 1988, and has thrived as a major tourist attraction for visitors to the historic Porbandar Town. Porbandar is an ancient port-town which is having a railway station that is comfortably connected to Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Apart from the rail-route, several state transport and private buses are regularly plying to/from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Veraval, Jamnagar, Junagadh and Porbandar.
Major Bird Species
Many varieties of avifauna are spotted in the Porbandar Bird Sanctuary; some of these prominent species include – Flamingoes, Grebes, Pelicans, Ducks, Geese, Avocets, Coots, Cormorants, Herons, Egrets, Bitterns, Storks, Ibis, Spoonbills, Cranes, Whistling Teals, Gulls, Terns, Jacanas, Ruffs, Red Shanks & Indian Rollers.
Millions of birds throng within this area during winter bringing alive the Porbandar Bird Sanctuary from dawn to dusk. A favorite picturesque landscape within the sanctuary provides numerous opportunities of close glimpses of these winged creatures residing and nesting all around. Spectacular sights of water-birds splashing in the freshwater lake can be seen along with delightful and joyous birding-activities.
