Mapusa is one of the five major cities in Goa, famous for its Parade and colorful Markets. Mapusa is derived from a Konkani term, 'map', which means measure and 'sa' means fill, which indicates the commercial nature of the town. This is the capital of Bardez taluka, North Goa and lies at close proximity to few popular attractions such as "Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary" Panaji and about 10 km inland from the Calangute, Baga, Anjuna and Vagator beaches. It is believed that Mapusa was a well developed land much before the Portuguese or even the Aryans, Marathas and the Sultans set their feet here and was indulged in the trade of gunkari or community farming system.

Mapusa Tourist Attractions

  • Mapusa Friday Market: A local fair held to honor 'God kanakeshwar Baba' at 'Bodgeshwar temple' has evolved into the Friday market of Mapusa. This market is located just outside the Municipal Market of Mapusa and attracts numerous traders from all over Goa coming to buy and sell various products. Furniture, utensils, handicrafts, vegetables, fruits, clothes, spices, fish, and other Goan goods, are items one will find in this market.
  • Mascarenhas Mansion: A beautiful Mansion built during the Portuguese rule is actually an excellent example of fantastic Portuguese architectural technique. This mansion is considered as one of the most popular tourist attractions at Mapusa. The L shaped seat along the front porch, made from expensive wood and refined stained glass floral engravings are prime attraction of this mansion.
  • Anjuna Beach: Situated at a distance of just 8 kms from Mapusa, Anjuna Beach offer golden sands, turquoise blue crystal clear waters of the Arabian Sea and swaying coconut trees. This beach provides good watersports.
