The Goa State Museum, in Goa is one of the most popular Panaji attractions among general tourists and hardcore history freaks. The Goa State Museum was originally set-up at St. Inez in 1996, under the jurisdiction of the Department of Archives in Goa and inaugurated the President of India, Shankar Dayal Sharma. Later the museum authorities constructed a new museum complex at Patto, which was venerated on 29th September, 1977.

Goa State Museum boasts of 12 different galleries with eclectic exhibits and collections. The museum was established to preserve the extravagant artifacts and ancient sculptures, which displays the vibrant history, heritage and traditions of Goa. This museum in Goa has become such a hit that it attracts tourists and visitors in great number from all over the globe.

The Goa State Museum has over 800 artifacts and sculptures in excellent and preserved condition, dating back many centuries. The priceless collections of Goa State museum includes many items like the copper plate inscription of Kadamba Kings, wooden statues of Christian saints, a huge 18th century wooden chariot, terracotta objects of Indus valley civilization, stone and bronze sculpture, modern art, furnishings employed through the Portuguese governor, miniature Mughal paintings, 16 th century enormous carved table around which the feared Inquisitors of Old Goa sat to judge. The museum also displays plenty of lottery devices of the Portuguese era.
