Cotigao wildlife sanctuary offers some of the best natural marvels and incredible sights for any nature lover traveling to Goa. Established in 1969 to protect the in danger, flora and fauna species of the area, Cotigao preserve is the second largest and multi-storeyed forests type in Goa. Spread over an area of 85.65 sq. kms this wildlife sanctuary is situated at the border of Goa and Karnataka and located within Canacona district in south Goa at a distance of 60 Kms from Panaji, the capital city of Goa. The two main river systems, the Talpona and Galjibaga flow in and around this sanctuary and are considered as the lifeline for the vegetation and animals of this reserve.

Things to Do and See at Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary

Vegetation: Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary vegetation is very dense, with a moist deciduous type of vegetation interspersed with semi - evergreen and evergreen type.

Wildlife: This unique wildlife refuge has varied wildlife species including snakes, monkeys, wild boars, deer, bisons, gaurs, sloth bears, laughing hyenas and the very rare Black Panthers. Bird species including the Rufus woodpecker, white-eyed eagle, Malabar crested eagle, white bellied woodpecker, etc.

Attractions at Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Nature Interpretation Centre: Established by the Forest Department, this centre provides visitors knowledge about forest and offer facilities like canvas tents, snake-proof camping sites and reference materials.
  • Watch Tower: The 25 meters watch tower at the sanctuary is located near the Talpona River, which is the best spot to view the forest and its animals and bird species.
  • Camping: Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary camping is allowed after acquiring permission by the Forest Department of Goa. Forest Department can provide canvas tents and other camping equipments.
  • Palolem Beach: This beach is best for one day picnics, offering visitors vast expanses of clean white sands and the crescent shaped bay is lined with swaying coconut palms.
  • Jeevotham Parthagal Math: Renowned centre for Vedic studies, this math is located close to the sanctuary.

How to Reach:

  • Nearest Airport Dabolim (80km)
  • Margao (53 kms) and Panaji (86 kms) are the nearest railheads from Cotigao.
  • From Margao and Panaji, buses ply to Karwar halt at Canacona.
