Nestled in the foothills of Western Ghats in Sanguem Taluka on the eastern border of Goa, the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary was formerly known as Mollem Game Sanctuary. This wildlife sanctuary of Goa is spread over an area of 240 sq. km, of which the core zone of the sanctuary, comprising an area of 107 sq. km, was declared a National Park in 1978 and is known as the Mollem National Park. The Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary is a home of exotic wildlife species and also offer varied tourist attractions including unique geographical formations and exclusive scenic spots. The sanctuaries pristine vegetation accompanied by the marvelous waterfalls makes this forest reserves a must visit location and popular wildlife attraction of Goa.

Things to Do and See at Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary


Wildlife: Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary offer wildlife enthusiasts with a wide variety of wildlife species including panther, leopard cat, jungle cat, mouse deer, spotted deer, barking deer, gaur, wild boar, wild dog, sambar, porcupine, bonnet macaque, common langur, civet, Malabar giant squirrel, pangolin, slender loris, king cobras, python, krait, viper etc. and non-poisonous snakes as well.

Vegetation: The lush green vegetation of the Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary typically ranges from tropical evergreen forests and semi-evergreen forests to moist deciduous forests. The major species of flora found in the sanctuary are Terminalia, Lagerstromia, Xylia, and Dalbergia.

Attractions at Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary


  • Dudhsagar Waterfall: Cascading from a height of 200 meters into a wide gorge making it milky, gives it the name 'Dudhsagar." The picturesque waterfall originates in the neighboring state of Karnataka is the marvelous and highest waterfall in Goa.
  • Devil's Canyon: Locally known as "Devcharacho kond" which translates to 'Devil's Canyon' is a splendid piece of geological rock formation. River Khandepar passes through the Sanctuary which cuts the basalt rock formation henceforth naming it Devil's Canyon.
  • Mollem National Park: This park is basically the core zone of Mahaveer Sanctuary (107sqkm), which has been notified as a national park in 1978. This park shares same eco-system and wildlife as Mahaveer Sanctuary.
  • Tambdi Surla Temple: Situated near the Tambdi village, this temple was build by the Kadamba kings in the 13 th centaury, has great historical importance. This temple is made out of black granite stones and has been dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • Eco-Tourism Wing: The Nature Interpretation Centre at Mollem provides exceptional help to tourists visiting the sanctuary and its surrounding areas. Valuable information like travel, accommodation, information about forest etc can be obtained from here, year-round.
