The extra-ordinary heritage and culture of Goa, in the form of antique artifacts is well preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Goa. The Archaeological Museum & Portrait Gallery is one of the popular museums of Goa, is housed in an abandoned convent of St. Francis of Assisi and in 1964 was converted in a museum. The Archaeological Museum displays objects that recreate the history of Goa and is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). This museum was re-organized in 1981-82, where visitors will find antiquities displayed in 8 galleries include the objects from the prehistoric and early historic period to the late mediaeval period.

Archaeological Museum of Goa Exhibits / Collections

The priceless collections of exhibits at Archaeological Museum of Goa are Antiques, sculptures, portraits, armory belonging to the Portuguese rule, portraits of Portuguese viceroys, few pre-Portuguese Hindu sculptures, coins, domestic wooden sculpture and sati and hero stones.

Master Pieces in the Museums Exhibits Include:

Ivory sculptures of Jesus Crucification, wooden sculpture of John the Baptist, Persian and Arabic inscription, Vishnu with ten incarnation, Luis Vaz de Camees, Surya, Gajalakshmi, bronze statue of Albuquerques (first governor of Goa), hero stone, sati stone, portrait paintings of Vasco da Gama, Com Joa de Castro, Portuguese arms like rifle, swords and daggers, etc.

Archaeological Museum Facilities

The additional facilities provided by the museum authorities for the visitors include, potable drinking water, clean inventory, video show on World Heritage properties in India, children activity center, publication sale counter.
