The temples in Raipur are a major tourist attraction and important pilgrimage destinations of central India. There are numerous important temples in Raipur, off which the Jagannath Temple is the most prominent one. Built in the year 1860, the temple is located in the Sadar Bazaar area of the city and is the first Jagannath temple of Chhattisgarh.  It is an important Hindu Temple visited by thousands of tourists and devotees throughout the year.  The serenity and wonder associated with it add grandeur to the place. The main attraction at Jagannath Temple in Raipur is the Rath Yatra. It is famously known as Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra.

During the festival the idols of Lord Balbhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath are taken in different chariots or raths, which are pulled by thousands of disciples. The entire festival is celebrated with religious fervor for 15 days. The yatra ends on the full moon day when the raths are taken back to the Jagannath Temple. According to the beliefs, whoever sees the yatra of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balbhadra and Devi Subhadra achieves "Moksh". The rath yatra is an important religious festival of Chhattisgarh in which devotees and tourists not only from Raipur but also from other parts of the state visit in large numbers for witnessing and becoming a part of the Grand Rath Yatra.
