Patna is the capital city of Bihar and its name is derived from Patan which is Hindu Goddess Patan Devi. This is the second largest city of eastern India and is one of the oldest inhabited places in the world. Patna is a beautiful city situated on the banks of holy River Ganga. Patna is an ancient historic city and its history dates back to 493 BC. It was the capital of the Magadha Empire and was ruled and conferred as the capital city of the Mauryan Empire. Indra Gandhi Planetarium is among one of the most visited tourist sites in Patna and is also considered as one of the largest and best planetariums in Asia. This Planetarium was constructed through Bihar Council on Science & Technology, was conceptualized in 1989 by Bihar CM Shree Satyendra Narain Sinha and was inaugurated by Shree Laloo Prasad, the then Chief Minister of Bihar, on March 21, 1993. The Indra Gandhi Planetarium is also called Patna Planetarium, and locally 'Taramandal'.

Sanjay Gandhi Botanical and Zoological Garden or popularly known as the Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan is located near Bailey Road in Patna, Bihar, India. This famous zoo in Patna is one of the 16 largest zoos in the country which was opened to the public in the year 1973. Started as a botanical garden the Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan is covering an area of 152.95 acres. The zoo currently holds over 800 animals of about 110 species and the park contains more than 300 species of trees, herbs and shrubs. This is the only zoo that provides free morning walk facility to the public from 5:00 am to 7:45 am.
