The Mahabodhi Temple is the most renowned Buddhist pilgrimage centers of the main four pilgrimages. This popular Bihar Pilgrimage destination is related to the life of Gautama Buddha and is a part of the three other Indian Buddhist temples which are the Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. Bodhgaya is located 96 kms (60 miles) from Patna, Bihar state in India. For Buddhist in India and around the world, the Mahabodhi temple is an important pilgrimage, as it is believed that here, Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha under the Banyan tree attained enlightenment. It was here that Siddhartha realized the 'Middle Way', which later became the centre of His teachings.

Temple Architecture and Attractions

Mahabodhi temple in Bihar was built in the 3rd century BC by Emperor Ashoka which has the reflection of the Gupta architecture. The Bodhi temple is 52mts in height and spread 15mts.sq in area. The major attraction of this temple is the statue of Buddha, in the pose of touching the earth, which is said to be 1700 years old.

Emperor Ashoka built the diamond throne (called the Vajrasana), to mark the exact spot of the Buddha's enlightenment. Inside the temple, visitors can see a museum, exhibiting a collection of Buddhist and Hindu relics, terracotta seals, scriptures etc. The Banyan tree can also be seen and the visitors will find monastery, a canopy supported by pillars and also many temples, stupas, monasteries and medication centers around this holy temple.

Best Time to Visit and Travel Information

The best time to visit Mahabodhi temple are the months between October and March and the doors of the temple remains open for the visitors everyday between 6 am to 12 noon and from 2 pm to 6.30 pm. The temple can be reached very easily by hiring taxis and also regular buses are available from anywhere in Bihar.
