Gaya is a city in Bihar, India, situated on the banks of river Niranjana also known as Phalgu. Gaya lies 100 kms from the capital city Patna and is of enormous significance for Hindus and Buddhists from India and abroad. Bodhi tree is about three kilometers from the heart of the town, its believed at this place Lord Buddha reached enlightenment.

The name of this village Gaya is derived from the mythological demon, named Gayasur, who was killed by Lord Vishnu. On the same hills of Gaya there are many temples of gods and goddess. Popular temples of Gaya are Vishnupad temple, Rama Shila, Mangla Gauri, Shringa Sthan and Brahmayoni. The prime attraction of Bodhgaya is Mahabodhi temple. Gaya city prime tourist attractions are Akshayabat, Barabar Caves, Brahmajuni Hill, Gaya Archaeological Museum, Rajgir and Surya Kund.

 
Archeological magnificence, the Barabar caves are basically rock-cut carved caves. These ancient caves are situated in the Barabar Hills at a distance of approximately 20 to 25 kms from Gaya in the Jehanabad District which is 24km north of Gaya, Bihar, India. These caves were constructed during the emperor Ashoka regime for the Ajivikas, around 200 BC. The Barabar caves are one of the oldest surviving caves in India, and two of the caves are found with Ashokan inscriptions.
