Bari Patan Devi Temple is a magnificent shrine located in Patna, Bihar. The Patan Devi Temple is also called Maa Patneshwari, which is the oldest and one of the most sacred temples of Patna. This temple enshrines black stone idols of Goddess Kali, Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati and Bhairav in a standing posture. The name of the city Patna has been derived from the name of the Bari Patan Devi Temple.

Legends at Bari Patan Devi Temple

Bari Patan Devi Temple legend says that according to the Hindu mythology, the right thigh of Devi Sati fell in Magadha and it is said that the part of the body of Sati fell in both Maharajganj and Chowk. Later on the Bari Patan Devi Temple, Patna and The Choti Patan Devi Temple were built at these places. As per Tantra Charumani the small images of the Bari Patan Devi Temple, are the Goddess Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati who once protected Putraka, who was the founder of Pataliputra. Also a strange stone image has been found here which is kept in the eastern veranda of the main temple and is worshiped regularly.

The temple remains open from morning 6 am to 10 pm at night. Bari Patan Devi Temple is just 6 km from the Patna Junction Railway Station and also it can be easily reached from the Patna Bus Station. Auto rickshaws can be had from Gandhi Maidan.
