Wildlife Sanctuaries in Assam

Although prone to natural disasters with annual floods and frequent mild earthquakes, Assam is endowed with and extraordinary forest cover and a unique biodiversity which is unparalleled in the entire world. Apart from two UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Kaziranga and Manas National Parks, Assam State encloses several reserved lakes, forests and wetlands attracting an exotic wildlife. Assam is also the last refuge for numerous other endangered species like the Golden Langur, Pygmy Hog, Hoolock Gibbon, White-Winged Wood Duck, Bengal Florican, Black-Breasted Parrotbill, Greater Adjutant, and Jerdon's Babbler.
 
The Chakrasila Hill Reserve Forest was eventually declared as the Chakrasila Hill Wildlife Sanctuary in 1994 by the government of India. Located at a distance of 70 kilometers from Dhubri Town it provides several facilities and activities for bird watching, forest trekking, wildlife, and nature photography. They are having tourist accommodations and camp sites at Choraikhola and Kokrajhor provided by the authorities and local NGOs where tourists can erect tents and enjoy free accommodation for up to a group of 15 individuals.

Hardly a couple of hours driving distance to the east of Guwahati City, the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Marigaon District of Assam. At a distance of 60 kilometers from town, approaching this sanctuary from Guwahati is one of the most beautiful journeys passing through a semi-hilly region alongside the River Brahmaputra. Spread over a 38.8 square kilometer area, the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary occupies a small portion of the magical village of Mayong.
