At a distance of 35 kilometers from Tezpur, Nameri National Park in the Sonitpur District of northern Assam is located within the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. Sharing the northern boundary with the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh, this park is the second Tiger Reserve within the state of Assam. Spread over a 200 square kilometer area and an additional 344 square kilometers of the Nameri Tiger Reserve, this exquisite landscape comprising of deciduous forests, hills and rivers, with cane and bamboo brakes and narrow strips of open grasslands on riversides, present a unique habitat for birds, wild animals as well as an enchanting variety of reptiles including the endemic Assam Roofed Turtles.
This excellent elephant country is an ideal home for a variety of animals including tigers, leopards, bison, sambar, dhole, hog deer, muntjac, sloth bear, Himalayan black bear, wild boar, capped langur, and giant squirrel. Nameri National Park, a birder’s paradise is also home to over 300 species of rare and endangered bird life which includes the white winged wood duck, the hornbill, the blue-bearded bee eaters, lesser adjutant stork, greater spotted eagle, white ramped and long billed vultures, the babblers, plovers and several other exotic species. Located at a distance of 220 kilometers to the northeast of Guwahati, the Salonibari Airport at Tezpur, at a distance of 34 kilometers is the closest air-route. Several comfortable tourism department run and private hotel accommodation options are available at Tezpur which is the most convenient and the nearest town to the Nameri National Park. However, November to April is the right season to be here, and when visitors can join various camps organized by the authorities.
