Historical Sites in Assam

A land of high rainfall with a unique hydro-geomorphic and aesthetic environment, Assam State is well known for its Sal tree forests and forest products generated all along the either sides of the mighty Brahmaputra River. Comprising of pre-historic popular habitats, ancient Assam was later ruled by the Ahoms, Koch and the Tibeto-Burmese dynasties. British and post-British rule brought along major changes including a versatile tea history which is lasting through current times. Effects of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity have left various marks reflected in the several historical sites that they have left behind. Assam is a great northeast Indian bowl that has contained and thrived on all types of influences heaped upon these regions from time to time.

Guru Nanak Dev, the first master of the Sikhs visited Assam in 1505. His visit to Kamrup, as Assam was known then, is mentioned in Purantan Janam Sakhi, the historical papers relating to the recorded activities of the saint. As he travelled from Dhaka to Assam, Guru Nanak Dev also met Shrimanta Shankardeva, the founder of the Mahapuruxiya Dharma in Assam. However, no shrine dedicated to the remembrance of this historical fact is in existence today.
