Hill Stations in Assam

Mostly located within the southeastern regions of Assam State comprising of the districts of North Cachar Hills and Karbi Anglong, Haflong is one of the most popular and well known hill stations of northeast India. Some of the other important tourist hill destinations include Diphu the headquarter of Karbi Anglong District, Umrangsu, Jatinga and Maibong located on the bank of Mahur River, and which once flourished as the capital of the Kachari Kingdom. Although dominated by the mighty Brahmaputra, some of the other popular hills near the cities in Assam State are the Nilachal Hill near Guwahati, and Ouguri and Bamuni Hills near Tezpur Town.
 
Fondly called the ‘Switzerland of the East’, Haflong Town is the headquarters of the North Cachar Hills District in the northeastern state of Assam. It is a quaint and extremely beautiful hill station garlanded by gently rolling hills, clear-water streams and numerous waterfalls. Situated at an elevation of 1,683 feet above mean sea level, these hills are normally hidden by rolling mists and clouds that hang around. Home to several tribes and cultures, the people of Haflong Town live in a serene harmony, and which is strikingly similar to the environment that surrounds.

Situated along the border with Meghalaya State, Umrangsu is an industrial town in Assam, located at a distance of 112 kilometers from Haflong. Severely affected by numerous factional fights amongst the terrorist organizations, Umrangsu is a major center contributing with large hydro-electric power generating projects over the Kopili River operated by the North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO). At a distance of 224 kilometers from Guwahati City, Umrangsu is emerging as a popular tourist destination on the Assam Tourism circuit.
