Historical Sites in Assam

Assamese culture is traditionally hybrid and has evolved from an assimilation of ethno-cultural groups in the past. The Kamarupa Kingdom, Varmans, Salastambhas, Palas, the Ahom Dynasty, Koch Kingdom and the Kachari Kingdom have all contributed until the show was eventually hijacked by the Vaishnava movement led by Srimanta Shankardeva. Along with this rich traditional past, the modern Assamese culture is greatly influenced by events in the British, and the post-British independent India. Some common unique cultural traits of Assamese people include respect towards areca-nut and betel leaves, symbolic clothes, traditional silk garments, hospitality and the bamboo culture.
