Angling Destinations in Assam

The Jia Bhoroli, Kopili, Subansiri & Manas River have some of the best places for angling in Assam. Especially the Jia Bhoroli River which is a northern tributary of the Brahmaputra River and home to the Golden Mahseer, a fierce game fish also known as the tiger amongst the rivers of the Himalayan region. An angling competition organized by the 'Assam Bhoroli Anglers Association' in collaboration with the State Forest Department is held every November at Jia Bhoroli. A number of anglers from Assam, India and various countries around the globe anxiously participate in this event. Home to so many lakes, ponds, rivers and wetlands, angling is a very popular sport in Assam. The season for angling commonly begins from October and continues right till the end of April every year.

The Subansiri River, which is the largest tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra River originates within the Himalayas in China. Contributing almost 8 percent of the total water-flow into the Brahmaputra, it flows east and southeast into India, and finally south to the Assam Valley where it empties into the Brahmaputra in Lakhimpur District. Just like other rivers coming from the Himalayas, it brings along schools of Golden Mahseer fishes along with the waters.
