Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh has an aged old tradition of nunneries which are called "Ani Gompa". Nunneries are basically facility where nuns live, unlike the monks (lamas) the girl child also becomes a nun by joining any of the nunnery on their own. The nuns of the nunneries of Tawang enjoy their self devoted lives. There are several nunneries located at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh namely Brama Dung Chung Ani Gompa, Gyangong Ani Gompa and Singsur Ani Gompa.

Brama Dung Chung Ani Gompa

This is one of the oldest nunneries of Tawang, located 9km from the district, which is surrounded by natural beauties. Established by a Lama named Karchen Yeshi Gelek from Tsang province of Tibet in the year 1595AD, the Brama Dung Chung Ani Gompa accommodates 45 'Anis' or nuns. Brahmadungchung Ani Gompa depends on begging for sustaining themselves.

Gyangong Ani Gompa

This is one of the most beautiful nunneries which are located on the top of a gorgeous hilltop about 5km away in the north of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. Founded by Mera Lam Lodre Gyamtso this Ani Gompa holds about 50 Buddhist Nuns.

Singsur Ani Gompa

This Gompa is one beautiful nunnery, located 28 km from Tawang district, in Arunachal Pradesh. Built by Rev. Gonpatse Rimpoche in 1960 the new Singsur Ani Gompa nunnery houses around 30 Anis. The old Singsur Ani Gompa is also in existence and is located amidst the 'Shaa' (huts) of the Anies.
